About St. Michael

St. Michael is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Eriskay, Na h-Eileanan Siar. It is part of the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles.

Introduction

Saint Michael's Church in Eriskay, in the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles, was opened in May 1903.

Architecture and furnishings

The church was built during the ministry of a poet-priest. The church is a plain Gothic apsidal building with an adjoining presbytery, raised on a hill overlooking the village. The church has a south gable gallery window and windows flanking a cross in the apse with stylised plate tracery. The church has a porch at the south end of the east wall with a pointed doorway and corbelled apex belfry.

The interior has a triple-arched chancel screen with cusped framing above. A stone font in the porch may be from an earlier building. The church is enclosed by a rubble-built wall, harled at the south and east. An iron bell to the north east on an iron frame is from the S.M.S. Derfflinger, recovered from Scapa Flow.
