About St. Michael's Church, Whitefield

St. Michael's Church, Whitefield is a Roman Catholic church in Whitefield, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

Saint Michael's Church, Whitefield, in the Diocese of Salford, began in a builder's hut on the Hillock estate, with early Masses celebrated in workmen's huts. The new church was designed by Greenhalgh and Williams and built by Carefoot, with the first sod turned in January 2000.

History

The first hut was just off Mersey Drive, with old curtains donated by neighbours used to cover workmen's belongings. The third and last hut where Mass was celebrated was near Elton Close, with electricity carried from a kind parishioner's house. Saint Michael's Infant and Junior Schools were completed and ready for use in 1968. In 1994, after lengthy consideration, the Diocese decided to allow Saint Michael's to build – if viability could be proven.

It was agreed that a church centre of 300 square metres would be required at a total cost of approximately £347,000. In April 1998 the Board finally gave its consent to Saint Michael’s to build the new church.

Architecture and furnishings

The 4ft high crucifix on the wall behind the altar was paid for by a donation of £25 from the Mothers' Union and £4 from another source. The Moran family, formerly of Hillock Farm, on whose land the Hillock estate was built, donated a chalice to the parish.

Parish life

The parish runs a Sacramental Programme for children in Year 3 preparing them for First Confession and First Holy Communion. The parish has a music ministry with musicians and singers leading music at weekend Masses, special services and parish events.

The parish has a Parish Pastoral Team that works with the parish priest to shape the spiritual and pastoral direction of the parish. Year 3 pupils from both parish schools walk together in friendship and prayer as they prepare for the Sacraments.

Regular events

Musical styles range from traditional organ-led music to keyboards, strings, and wind instruments, with extra rehearsals for bigger occasions, particularly around Easter and Christmas.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Children prepare for First Holy Communion over several months, supported by a team of parent and parishioner catechists. Children attending parish primary schools are contacted at the beginning of Year 3 for sacramental preparation.

The parish has a large team of Eucharistic Ministers performing this ministry. The parish SVP group provides practical help to the elderly, sick and housebound, the bereaved and others with special needs, offering support in times of crisis.

The parish runs a Journey in Faith Programme for adults interested in learning about the Catholic faith. New singers and musicians are always welcome to join the music ministry without audition.
