Introduction
St Patrick in Wapping, London, was built in 1879 to the design of architect Tasker.
Architecture and furnishings
A narthex was added to the church in 1892. The church is built of yellow stock brick with pedimented gable ends and a stone cornice, in a classical design with high paired rectangular windows above a stone band. The narthex has five arches, panelled doors and wrought iron entrance gates. The interior has large Ionic columns and a nave with a timber wagon roof.
Parish life
The St Patrick Wapping St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Society Conference was established in late 2023 to offer practical help to local residents in need. The Wapping SVP makes regular visits to local residents, whether parishioners or not, who may be lonely or require practical or financial assistance. The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated every other year.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Preparation for Baptism and Matrimony is by arrangement with the Parish Office, with six months' notice required for marriage. For infant baptism, at least one parent must be Catholic and either resident in the parish of Wapping or regularly attending Sunday Mass in Wapping. Children aged seven or more are directed to contact the Parish Priest directly for baptism.
