St Paul - Hyde

Introduction

The Roman Catholic Church of St Paul in Hyde, in the Diocese of Shrewsbury, is a Grade II listed building. On Friday, 20th May 1853, the foundation stone of the church was laid, and it opened for worship on 21st June 1854.

Parish life

The parish supports St Mary's Catholic Primary, Dukinfield, St Paul's Catholic Primary, Hyde and All Saints Catholic College, Dukinfield. The parish priest visits the sick and homebound regularly. Arrangements exist in the parish for Holy Communion to be taken to the sick and housebound.

The confirmation programme runs every year, usually starting before Easter, with candidates invited to participate in the Washing of the Feet on Maundy Thursday. Confirmation teaching is at St Mary's church on a weekday evening and is supported by the diocesan youth team.

Sacraments and pastoral care

First Holy Communion candidates receive Holy Communion for the first time on a Saturday usually in May or June, prepared in schools by class teachers with evening sessions for families and the Parish Priest. Couples must book their wedding date and time at least a year in advance with the parish priest. Prior to marriage, couples must attend a number of preparation sessions, including a course with Marriage Care based in Stockport.
