St. Peter & Paul, Ribchester

Introduction

The church is built of squared coursed sandstone with a slate roof and chamfered quoins.

Architecture and furnishings

The west and east walls have windows with plain stone surrounds, semi-circular heads, projecting imposts and keystones, the east wall having five bays and the west four. The north wall has a plain stone door surround of alternating rustication with a semi-circular head and a glazed fanlight with glazing bars. Above the north door is a plain stone window surround with a semi-circular head, projecting imposts and keystone, lighting the gallery. The south end has a hipped roof with a moulded eaves cornice and a blocked plain stone window surround on each floor.

To the west is a single-storey bay linking the church to the presbytery. At the north end is a gallery with a front of stick balusters, projecting at the centre in a half oval. The gallery is supported by slim iron columns and reached by a stair with a ramped handrail and stick balusters. When viewed from the south, the church appears to be one of a pair of pavilions to Stidd Lodge. The Roman Catholic Church was built in 1789.
