About St Philip - Offerton

St Philip - Offerton is a Roman Catholic church in Offerton, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

Introduction

St Philip's Church in Offerton, in the Diocese of Shrewsbury, was built in 1967 and dedicated to the apostle Philip.

History

In 1972 a new priest took over, built a primary school on Half Moon Lane, and in 1977 a new presbytery adjacent to the church. The school was extended in 1986. The church hall had seating for 320 and two sacristies, built in downing rustic brick with teak reredos, altar and two lecterns.

Parish life

St Philip's continues to serve the Offerton community with practical friendship and refugee support activities. St Peter's and St Philip's are part of Local Pastoral Area 20, together with several other parishes. The church is located behind a row of shops near the junction of Lisburne Lane and the A626 Marple Road.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Adults wishing to be baptised are directed to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Teams of Eucharistic ministers take Communion to the housebound or hospitalised. St Peter's provides spiritual care for Roman Catholic patients at Stepping Hill Hospital, with an ecumenical team visiting patients bed-by-bed. A team of 'prayer warriors' prays for intentions sent to the parish office, and virtual candles can be lit. The bereavement group offers a variety of events throughout the year to provide a relaxed and helpful space to meet others who understand the grieving process.
