About St. Richard of Chichester, Atherton

St. Richard of Chichester, Atherton is a Roman Catholic church in Atherton, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Parish life

Funeral Masses are undertaken by a priest, while most other services are sometimes conducted by local deacons. The parish comprises St Richard's church in Atherton, Sacred Heart church in Hindley Green, and Sacred Heart church in Hindsford, which is closed. The parish community is on the edge of Liverpool Archdiocese on the border with Manchester.

Children in Year 4 of Primary school preparing for First Holy Communion and Reconciliation need to be registered for the Sacramental Programme at a Registration Mass, usually in the Autumn Term. Registration for Confirmation usually takes place via the 'Liverpool Called' website available from January of each year.

Sacraments and pastoral care

To arrange a child's baptism or adult baptism, contact the parish priest after Sunday Mass. Baptised adults who have not made their first Holy Communion may speak to the parish priest about preparing to receive the sacrament. Those wishing to be married at St Richards or Sacred Heart churches should contact the parish priest. Confession is available on request.

For anointing of the sick, contact the parish priest, or in emergency any local priest. After a loss, the first contact should be with the chosen undertaker, who supports and guides through organising a funeral, and one must decide between a funeral service or requiem Mass. The parish priest contacts the family to arrange the funeral Mass or service and to discuss readings and hymns.
