About St. Stephen's, Welling

St. Stephen's, Welling is a Roman Catholic church in Welling, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Introduction

The original church, built as a lock-up Chapel-of-Ease, cost £2,688. In 1929 Saint Stephen's became an independent parish, and Father Clifford Nevatt arrived as its first parish priest.

Architecture and furnishings

The original interior had a lower ceiling, a pulpit from the earlier church with steps from behind the pillar next to Our Lady's altar, and altar rails separating the sanctuary. After the war, a damaged organ and part of an organ loft and stairway were purchased from a bombed London church; parishioners built a loft in the present church, and the low ceiling was removed, exposing steel girders and the roof's underside. Structural alterations to the sanctuary were made, the exposed girders in the ceiling were filled in, and lighting and heating were improved.

Parish life

The choirs come together for special Masses such as at Easter and for an annual Christmas Carol Service. On 14th September 1933 the first group of seven sisters took possession of their convent 'Maryville' in Bellegrove Road. The sisters were introduced to the parish at Sunday Mass and the front bench was from then on always reserved for them. For two weeks each year the parish was handed over to missioners for a Parish Mission.

Visiting

Visitors can view photos of the church, inside and out, with larger views and descriptions. The Parish Hall was erected in 1935 alongside the railway, some distance from the church and presbytery.
