About St Thomas More, Alkrington

St Thomas More, Alkrington is a Roman Catholic church in Alkrington, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

St Thomas More in Alkrington, within the Diocese of Salford, opened on 1 March 1972 with seating for 430 people. The church was consecrated on 20 June 1980 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Salford.

History

The diocese purchased the site at the top of Mainway and corner of Kirkway from Whelmar, which Middleton Council had scheduled as 'church land'. In 1966 application to build a church was refused, but permission was granted for a presbytery, built from August 1966 to August 1967. The parish was amalgamated with St Peter's on 28 May 2019 to form the new parish of St Peter & St Thomas More. The Diocesan Finance Board approved plans for the church on 30 April 1969 at a cost of £55,000 excluding furnishings, and building began in May 1970.
