About St Thomas More, Hartley Wintney

St Thomas More, Hartley Wintney is a Roman Catholic church in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

St Thomas More in Hartley Wintney, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, was built in 1962 to the design of J. M. Raymond and originally seated 40 people.

Architecture and furnishings

The church was enlarged in 1965 to seat about 120 worshippers. The church suffered damage in a 2016 fire when the roof was destroyed. The building is a modest hall-type structure of yellow brick with a tiled roof.

Parish life

The parish is named for Saint Thomas More, the English martyr and patron of statesmen. Before the local church was established, Catholic worshippers in the area travelled to neighbouring parishes for Mass and the sacraments. The parish offers regular Masses, catechetical programmes, and sacramental preparation. The parish celebrates the feast of Saint Thomas More on 22 June each year.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Parents who wish to have their child baptised should speak with a priest according to where they live; the priest will explain the process and guide them through the preparation. Children prepare through a parish programme to understand the meaning of the sacrament of First Holy Communion. Couples wishing to marry in a Catholic church should contact the priest at least six months in advance (a year is recommended).
