The Holy Family

Introduction

The present church was completed and opened by Bishop John Barrett on 21 November 1937, built by Hansford's of Honiton in seven months. The church is in a simple Gothic design. The parish name 'Holy Family' derives from the reredos on the original altar in the Lindsay Family Chapel, depicting Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

History

Leonard Lindsay and his brother the Reverend Claud Lindsay erected a small temporary iron church in 1898 on a site they purchased on Church Hill, Honiton. In 1931 Leonard and Claire Lindsay arranged with Bishop John Barrett to leave Broomhill's House to the diocese on condition the Bishop find a religious order to run the parish. In 1933 the Augustinian Recollect Order agreed with Bishop Barrett to take responsibility for the parish, and in 1935 they established a new temporary chapel at Broomhills House. The Munich Altar, the original altar from the Lindsay Family Chapel, is located in the Lindsay Memorial Chapel adjacent to the main altar.

The parish offers daily Mass. The parish offers Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Confessions are heard every day after daily Mass in Saint Rita's Centre Chapel and before and after Sunday Mass.
