About The Holy Family, Sanderstead

The Holy Family, Sanderstead is a Roman Catholic church in Sanderstead, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

History

Until 1921 the only two Catholic churches serving the whole of Croydon were Saint Mary's, West Croydon, founded in 1863, and Saint Gertrude's in 1903. Mass centres were formed in Selsdon (1921), Purley (1931), Waddon (1933) and Sanderstead (1942). Plans for the acquisition of a plot of land for the future church began in 1946 when Misses Cox and Richardson gave up property and Father Hanrahan arranged for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southwark to buy the land and the property.

Parish life

The parish runs the Olde Forge Café, an evangelisation café involving over 50 parishioners as hosts, bakers and welcomers. The parish intends to use the Olde Forge cottage for silent directed retreats, where individuals stay in the self-contained cottage and receive daily counselling and direction. The parish has a Foodbank ministry. The parish has a Scripture Prayer Group. The parish café is a place of welcome, friendship, and community where everyone is invited to feel at home.
