About The Sacred Heart
The Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in Teddington, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
The Sacred Heart in Teddington, within the Archdiocese of Westminster, traces its origins to a Roman Catholic chapel opened in Hampton Wick in 1882, with the present church opened in 1893.
History
Under Father Philip Foley, the parish raised funds for expansion, and in 1933 the old front was demolished and the new presbytery built. The church survived local bombing during the Second World War, though about a third of the parish was evacuated due to doodlebug flying bombs. The church was redecorated throughout in 1957. In 1968 the heating system changed from coal to gas. In 2009, the interior of the church was completely refurbished, the parquet floor restored and the kneelers re-upholstered.
Parish life
The parish serves the communities of Teddington and Hampton Wick. The parish has parish groups for prayer, social action, sacramental preparation, youth work and support. The parish refers those with marriage difficulties to Marriage Care, professionally trained marriage counsellors.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The Baptismal course occurs only four times a year and is best undertaken before the baby is born. Parishioners planning to marry at Sacred Heart must give at least six months notice and join a marriage course.
Visiting
The church reopened on a joyful weekend of thanksgiving between 27th and 29th June 2025, after being closed due to storm damage for over 3 years. Routes 281 and 285 stop within 100 yards of the church at the Fairfax Rd stop. There is no parking on site, but parking in the roads around the church is usually quite easy.
