About Church of St Augustine, Hoddesdon
Church of St Augustine, Hoddesdon is a Roman Catholic church in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
The Church of St Augustine in Hoddesdon traces its Catholic heritage to a mediaeval chapel of St Catherine, mentioned as early as 1242, which served pilgrims to Walsingham on the site of the present Clock Tower.
History
The Canons Regular of St Augustine founded the parish in 1932 when they moved into Hoddesdon that year. In 1958 the Augustinian canons departed from Hoddesdon, and the Archdiocese of Westminster assumed responsibility for the parish. The church underwent reordering in 1989 and again in 1996. In 1962 the new church of St Augustine was opened. The parish runs groups for prayer, social action, Sacramental preparation, youth work and support of others.
