About Church of St. Joseph, Fishponds

Church of St. Joseph, Fishponds is a Roman Catholic church in Fishponds, Bristol. It is part of the Diocese of Clifton.

Introduction

Bishop Ambrose Burton of Clifton laid the foundation stone of the Church of Saint Joseph, Fishponds in 1923, and on 19 March 1925 he consecrated the church, which had been completed within two years. In 1929 the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration at Taunton presented the high altar of their chapel to the Church of Saint Joseph, Fishponds.

History

A corrugated-iron temporary chapel previously used in Park Lane was taken apart and put up again at Forest Road, where worship continued for many years while the Great War delayed the permanent church. The parish grew as new housing filled Fishponds, Soundwell and Kingswood, and separate parishes were formed first for Kingswood, then for Frenchay and finally for Downend.

The Church of Saint Joseph, Fishponds celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the present church in 2025. The Church of Saint Joseph, Fishponds has an organ.

Parish life

The parish is made up of Catholic faithful drawn from more than twelve nationalities. Readers proclaim the Word of God at weekday and weekend Mass on a regular rota, and training is given. Greeters give people arriving at Mass a service sheet and hymn book, notice newcomers, and answer or pass on queries. A Mass can be said for a particular intention by contacting the parish office.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Confirmation is usually offered every two years for young people in Year 8 and above, in approximately 10 sessions. Weddings and baptisms are arranged by appointment. Confession is available after midweek Mass or by appointment.
