About Church of St Thomas More, Knebworth

Church of St Thomas More, Knebworth is a Roman Catholic church in Knebworth, Hertfordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

This temporary church was the first in England dedicated to St Thomas More, dedicated on the day of his canonisation, 16 May 1935.

History

In 1928, a house in London Road, now the Presbytery, was bought and an upper room was converted into a chapel dedicated to St Dunstan. Fr Reginald Phillips served as parish priest from 1936 to 1950. The Lady Chapel of St Thomas More is dedicated as a Shrine to Our Lady of Banneux, the Virgin of the Poor.

Parish life

The Knebworth Family of Churches is made up of the congregations of St Thomas More (Catholic), St Mary and St Martin (Church of England), Trinity (Methodist/United Reformed) and The Risen Christ (Redeemed Christian Church of God). On 15 June 2008 the churches signed a Covenant to commit to developing and strengthening their Christian witness. The churches hold united services, ecumenical house groups, Lent groups, social events, support for charities and the Stevenage Food Bank, and special Easter and summer holiday clubs for children. A pilgrimage to the Shrine takes place each May.
