About Church of The Holy Cross, Gellilydan

Church of The Holy Cross, Gellilydan is a Roman Catholic church in Blaenau-Ffestiniog, Gwynedd. It is part of the Diocese of Wrexham.

Introduction

The church was extended by the addition of a gabled porch and a low extension built at right angles to the northwest.

History

The Church of The Holy Cross in Gellilydan, Blaenau-Ffestiniog, is probably a late 18th-century building, formerly a tannery, converted to a Roman Catholic church in the mid twentieth century.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is a tall gable entry building of mortared rubble masonry with a slate roof, and the main part is a 4-bay linear range with each bay articulated by a tall narrow window with slate sills. A stained glass window is set in the circular light in the southwest gable apex, below which is the entrance porch. The modern addition to the northwest is a single storey range of three 6-pane windows with a slate roof and grit rendered elevations.
