Church of the Holy Family, Chagford

Introduction

The congregation relocated in 1946 to the British Legion Hall, a place afterwards renamed Saint Catherines House and subsequently Endacott House.

History

The large room at the British Legion Hall contained a billiard table as well as a table tennis table, and the inner room held a makeshift altar with about 16 chairs. When the building changed hands the congregation received notice and moved to the Jubilee Hall. In 1950 the priest was moved and was followed by another priest. About 25 people made up the congregation when money was sought to build their own church.

The first bazaar fell on 15 December 1957, a very snowy day. The bazaar raised £250.

Music and liturgy

Mass was originally celebrated at Gidleigh Park, a private house, before moving to the British Legion Hall in 1946. Parishioners take Eucharistic services when the priest is unable to come.
