Holy Spirit Church, Bovey Tracey

Introduction

Holy Spirit Church, the present church in Bovey Tracey, was built in 1936. Mr and Mrs Dahl holidayed in Bovey each year, took an interest in the church, had a house built, and came to live.

History

The RCIA course 'The Faith of the Catholic Church' was written by a previous parish priest. Local Catholics walked to Chudleigh and to Ugbrooke for Mass in the chapel there before a Catholic church existed in Bovey Tracey. Reverend James Shore served from 1906 to 1907. Priests from Buckfast Abbey served from 1907 to 1929: Reverends Webber, Singleton, Whitby and Pratt.

Reverend McLachlan served from 1929 to 1936. Reverend A G Herring served in 1938.

Regular events

During the time of a canon who served the parish, processions concluded with Benediction at a grotto to Our Lady in the church garden. The girls and nuns of Ignsdon Convent and Polish people from Stover Camp in national costume joined the processions. Adults thinking about entering into full communion with the Catholic Church are directed to speak to the parish priest.
