About First Martyrs
First Martyrs is a Roman Catholic church in Bradford, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.
Parish life
The parish supports groups and societies providing social and spiritual activities in the local area. The parish fundraises for CAFOD every Lent and Harvest in October. The parish takes part in the annual Christian Aid Week in May with house-to-house collections, and participates in the Council of Churches Safari Supper every 2 years and the Christian Aid service annually. The parish set up an advice centre at 203 Lumb Lane and manages a charity shop 'Ark' at 89 Heights Lane.
Half the proceeds from coffee mornings and evenings are kept for kitchen refurbishment and half given to CAFOD. The parish is spread over the Heaton and Manningham areas of Bradford and parishioners enjoy two churches: First Martyrs' on Heights Lane and Saint Cuthbert's on Wilmer Road. The parish is a Fair Trade parish and a member of the West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council and the Girlington, Heaton, Manningham Council of Churches, supporting the Ark Charity Shop.
Regular events
The parish holds tea and cake after Sunday morning Mass, along with Fairtrade stalls, ceilidhs, quizzes, raffles, pilgrimages, and choir performances.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Confirmation is arranged in conjunction with the Deanery and the availability of the Bishop. The SVP was inaugurated in Saint Cuthbert's in 1927 and at a later date in First Martyrs', merging in 2006 when the two parishes became one.
