About Holy Cross, Bedford

Holy Cross, Bedford is a Roman Catholic church in Bedford, Bedfordshire. It is part of the Diocese of Northampton.

Introduction

Holy Cross Church in Bedford was built and opened in November 1957. The church was intended as a temporary building that would later become the parish hall once a permanent church was constructed.

History

The Scalabrini Fathers, an Italian order of priests, came to the area to celebrate Mass for the large Italian community. In 1966, the side aisles were added to the church. After the Scalabrini Fathers left Goldington in 1972, the Fathers of The Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (the Picpus Fathers) took over and served the parish until 2003. In October 2007, Holy Cross Church celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The church was consecrated with the sprinkling of holy water, the anointing with blessed oil, and with incense.

Music and liturgy

The music group at Holy Cross Church provides music for the Sunday Mass, including instrumental, congregational, solo and choir pieces. The group sings the Gloria, Psalm, Sanctus and Agnus Dei during Mass. The group uses 'The Liturgy Planner' by Decani Music to plan music according to the liturgical season.

Parish life

Couples preparing for marriage at Holy Cross participate in a formation programme which runs over three Saturdays in the Spring at Ss Philip & James Church.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The North Bedford Catholic Community provides a united sacramental programme for the combined parishes of The Holy Cross and Saints Philip and James. Married Catholic mentor couples accompany engaged couples on the programme, ‘Smart Loving Engaged’, which includes DVDs and time for private discussion. Baptisms are ordinarily celebrated on Sunday afternoons or Saturday evenings in either Holy Cross or SS Philip and James churches.
