About Our Lady of Ransom, Kempston

Our Lady of Ransom, Kempston is a Roman Catholic church in Kempston, Bedfordshire. It is part of the Diocese of Northampton.

Introduction

The parish of Our Lady of Ransom, Kempston at first carried the name Kempston & Wotton Parish. Our Lady of Ransom, Kempston is sister parish to the Holy Child and Saint Joseph Catholic Church, a Diocese of Northampton parish in Bedford. The altar of Our Lady of Ransom, Kempston was consecrated on 19 April 1983.

History

Kempston’s original Catholic church was a wooden nissan hut in the grange army camp. The Catholic church in Kempston soon moved into a brick building near the main entrance that had been the arms store, where army personnel and parishioners attended Mass together. Wotton’s services were a Saturday vigil Mass, held at a green hut and later at the Methodist Church.

Music and liturgy

During children's liturgy activities, children and adult helpers use the meeting room at Our Lady's to explore the theme of the Mass and the day's Gospel, after which the children rejoin the congregation with their work. Flowers at Saint Joseph's and Our Lady's are arranged and displayed by a rota that meets fortnightly.
