About Holy Cross, Catford

Holy Cross, Catford is a Roman Catholic church in Catford, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Introduction

Bishop Amigo opened Holy Cross Church in Catford on 14 September 1904, the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Holy Cross was one of over 20 churches built under the financial patronage of Miss Frances Ellis (1846-1930), an heiress who converted to Catholicism. The architect of Holy Cross was F W Tasker, and the building was described in The Tablet as a plain and unpretentious structure.

History

The church was originally serviced from Lewisham, and its first parish priest, Father Edward Escarguel, was installed on 7 January 1905. The church was formally consecrated in July 1960.

Architecture and furnishings

The sanctuary, sacristy and organ were added in 1924, and the porch at the front of the building in 1949. Miss Ellis requested that each of her churches be small, simple and Romanesque in style, and they became known as Miss Ellis boxes. The interior has seen the addition of stained glass windows, wall paintings, shrines and statues over the years.

Parish life

The parish runs a First Holy Communion programme for children entering Year 3 of primary school, with monthly sessions and family involvement. The parish has a Union of Catholic Mothers group. The parish intends to establish a Bereavement Support Group, guided by the Council's bereavement officer.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs an RCIA programme described as a relaxed, open journey of prayer, learning, and friendship. The parish intends to revitalise the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and expand outreach through a parish food bank. The parish intends to form small faith groups of 10+ families each for Scripture sharing, prayer and mutual support. The parish intends to reconnect with parishioners who feel disconnected, inviting them to coffee mornings, cultural events and parish activities.

The parish arranges pilgrimages and group walks for spiritual reflection, community bonding and appreciation of God's creation. The parish celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity through special Masses, integrating choirs and traditions from different communities.
