About Holy Cross
Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic church in London, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
Holy Cross church in Parsons Green, London, was built in 1924, paid for by Mr Edward Eyre, with the foundation stone laid on 19 January 1924 by Bishop But and formally opened on 21 December 1924 by Cardinal Bourne.
History
In 1842, a Mass centre and school for girls and infants was established in Parsons Green Lane. Between 1848 and 1884, Mass was celebrated occasionally for poor Irish workers in a house at the bottom of Crown Street, served from the parishes of Brook Green, Hammersmith, and St Thomas of Canterbury. In June 1884, a school chapel in Cassingley Road (now Ashington Road) was formally opened by Cardinal Manning, with the school on the upper floor and the chapel on the ground floor. In 1887, the use of the school as a chapel was abandoned due to increasing numbers of children, and a temporary iron church was built nearby. A west extension was constructed in 1956.
Architecture and furnishings
In the Chapel of Our Lady, there is a bronze plaque in memory of those who had died in the Great War. After the war, the parish redesigned the sanctuary with a new altar of Carrara marble, which dockers, many of them parishioners, carried manually in procession to the church.
Music and liturgy
Children's Liturgy sessions take place in the nursery's facility, where children experience the Liturgy of the Holy Mass in a joyful and child-friendly atmosphere.
Parish life
The parish runs a Confirmation programme for young people in school year 9 and above who live within the parish and are practising their Catholic faith. The parish runs an RCIA programme for adults aged 18 and over, with candidates receiving initiation at the Easter Vigil.
Sacraments and pastoral care
For Baptism of an infant, at least one parent must be a practising Catholic and either resident in the parish or regularly attending Sunday Mass there. Engaged couples seeking marriage in Church should inform the parish priest at least six months before the intended wedding date.
