Holy Ghost Church, Exmouth

Introduction

Holy Ghost Church in Exmouth, within the Diocese of Plymouth, was consecrated on May 6th 1915 by Bishop John Keily, the 4th Bishop of Plymouth.

History

In 1887 Bishop Vaughan sent Father Grainger to start a mission in Exmouth. By the papal decree Sapiento Concilio, missions in England and Wales became canonical parishes in 1908.

In 1912 Lord Clinton offered the site for the Church of the Holy Ghost and the present side aisle was built. Through the generosity of Mrs Maria Hamilton Thomas the nave and sanctuary were completed. Holy Ghost church was re-ordered in 2007 and a new stone altar and ambo was commissioned for the sanctuary. St Anne's Cloister was completed in April 2008 and blessed on the feast of the Ascension.

Architecture and furnishings

To commemorate the centenary, three new lancet windows depicting the radiance of the Holy Spirit were commissioned and fitted. The modern Stations of the Cross and the furniture were given by parishioners.
