About Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity is a Roman Catholic church in Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway. It is part of the Diocese of Galloway.
Introduction
Holy Trinity in Lockerbie, in the Diocese of Galloway, is a Gothic church designed by Ford Mackenzie and built in Corncockle sandstone with a large rose window.
History
The structure was acquired as a Catholic Church in 1973. Before that acquisition, Catholics in Lockerbie worshipped for many years in 'St Mungo's' or the 'Tin Hut' in Sidney Place. A resident priest arrived in the town around 1959-60. The church was built as Trinity Church for the United Presbyterian Church in 1874 and became a Church of Scotland in 1929.
Architecture and furnishings
The church has a good square tower at the SE corner with a spire, red ashlar with polychrome arches. The off-set third (belfry) stage is broached to support an 8-sided lucarned tall spire. The interior retains organ tubes on the N gable but the organ has been replaced by an altar. The gallery at the S has an elaborate panelled front and is supported on a pair of cast-iron columns.
The church contains a plaque dedicated to the memory of the 270 victims of the Lockerbie Air Disaster on 21st December 1988. A copy of the Lockerbie Book of Remembrance is on display in the church.
The church was built in 1874-5 as a well-detailed rectangular-plan gothic church. The tower has two lower stages with plate-traceried ground floor windows and diagonal buttresses. Holy Trinity has a choir that people can join.
