About Most Holy Redeemer, Sawbridgeworth

Most Holy Redeemer, Sawbridgeworth is a Roman Catholic church in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

Most Holy Redeemer in Sawbridgeworth, within the Archdiocese of Westminster, first celebrated Mass in its new church on December 2, 1956.

History

Volunteer parishioners created the church by transforming a former cinema, levelling the floor which sloped 4ft 6in, in about three months. From January 1953, services were held at the newly-built War Memorial Hall. For the Millennium, a major renovation built a new roof, replaced timbers and removed stage curtaining and a low ceiling. The local Walter Lawrence company provided a new altar at a nominal cost.

Music and liturgy

Most Holy Redeemer maintains a talented and dedicated group of musicians and a choir. During the first COVID-19 lockdown, the choir performed 'Regina Coeli' with individually pieced-together parts.

Parish life

The Flower Guild arranges flowers for the high altar weekly. The Flower Guild has organised two large flower festivals involving other churches in the town.

The Justice and Peace Group raises awareness of social justice issues in the UK and worldwide, including arms trade, world peace, poverty, debt, ethical banking, fairtrade, and refugees. There are two active Teams in Bishop’s Stortford, meeting monthly and going on an annual retreat.

The Parish Social Committee helps turn parishioners' event ideas into successful events. The Catholic Parish of Bishop’s Stortford incorporates the churches of St Joseph and the English Martyrs, Holy Cross, and Most Holy Redeemer. Most Holy Redeemer opens its doors only for the celebration of Mass.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs a special programme to help children prepare for receiving the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is offered for those seeking baptism or full communion with the Catholic Church. The parish helps families prepare the funeral service of someone who has died. The parish offers the RCIA programme for those baptised Catholic but never received First Holy Communion or confirmation, and for the unbaptised discerning becoming Catholic.
