About Most Holy Sacrament

Most Holy Sacrament is a Roman Catholic church in Marton, East Riding of Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.

Introduction

The church was built in 1789 by the Constable family as a replacement for earlier rooms and buildings in and around Burton Constable Hall and estate which had served as chapels throughout the Recusant period.

Architecture and furnishings

The church was built in 1788-1789 by Thomas Atkinson for William Constable. The church is built of pinkish-brown brick in English garden wall bond with a Welsh slate roof. The interior has a gallery on four Doric columns at the west end. The church contains a Neoclassical marble wall monument to Mary Chichester, who died in 1815, by Tyley of Bristol.

The church has a stained-glass window dated 1946. The church has a single tall storey, three bays with a single-bay extension to the east and a porch to the west. The entrance is a double plank door to the south side of the porch under a round arch. The west end has a 16-pane sash to the right of the door and a 16-pane window with radial glazing to the head in the gable.

The interior has an arcade of blank round-arched recesses with raised imposts on the north side, and a similar arcade containing windows on the south side. The interior has a moulded cornice and a segmental vault. The church has a shallow chancel bay with wall paintings. The church retains remains of box pews to the west.
