About Mother of God, Leicester

Mother of God, Leicester is a Roman Catholic church in Leicester, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Mother of God church in Leicester was consecrated on 21 November 1975. The foundation stone was laid on 14 June 1956.

History

A mission was started in 1947 by St Peter's at the White House on Stephenson Drive. Building was started in 1955. A porch was built over the side entrance.

Architecture and furnishings

A statue of Our Lady, modelled on the statue of Our Lady of Betharram, was installed over the front entrance. The words 'Mother of God – Pray for us' were carved in the stonework under the statue. Statues of Our Lady and St Joseph were installed in the recesses on either side of the sanctuary.

Parish life

A mission week by the Redemptorist Fathers was held in October 1978. A Thanksgiving Mass was planned for 11 October 1982, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening Mass. A summer fête is held, with profits going to the Building Work Appeal.
