About Saint Peter, Leicester
Saint Peter, Leicester is a Roman Catholic church in Leicester, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.
Introduction
The Mission of Saint Peter was placed under the care of the secular clergy in 1896.
History
Canon Caus died on January 18th, 1931, leaving the parish free of debt, with church, presbytery and land all paid for. Canon Henry A. Hunt, a native of Leicester, was appointed in March 1933; the altar of Saint Peter's Church was a gift from his father. In 1938 a Chapel of Ease, the English Martyrs, was blessed by the Bishop on the vigil of the Ascension, served by Saint Peter's priests. Saint Peter's Parish played a major part towards the English Martyrs' School on Anstey Lane, officially opened on May 4th, 1965.
The last Mass in the old church on King Richard's Road was said at lunch time on the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, 1978, and the first Mass in the new church was said the same day in the evening after a procession. In 1977, boundaries changed, transferring Kirby Muxloe from Saint Peter's to Blessed Sacrament.
Parishioner F. J. Bradford designed and built the church, which opened on October 15th, 1905. Bishop Brindle laid the foundation stone of the new church on June 13th, 1905.
Regular events
On the eve of every third Sunday of January, the feast of Santo Niño, the community is joined by parishioners and friends in holding a solemn feast-eve Holy Mass celebration in the church.
