About Our Lady and Saint Thomas of Canterbury

Our Lady and Saint Thomas of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic church in Harrow on the Hill, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

Our Lady and Saint Thomas of Canterbury in Harrow on the Hill was built in 1894 by Arthur Young in the C14 style. In 1976, Cardinal Basil Hume attended a service of thanksgiving with parishioners for the newly restored church.

Architecture and furnishings

Cardinal Henry Manning authorised the building of a small chapel on 6 May 1873 on a site in Roxborough Road and made a donation towards the cost. The church is built of brick with roughcast facing and some flint and stone dressings, with a long low nave with tile roof. The church has a south aisle with timber waggon vault, a short north aisle, an octagonal baptistry to the west of the south aisle, and a gallery at the west end. The church has a short battlemented octagonal tower with chequerboarding to the east of the south porch. The architectural style of the church is in the manner of the English Perpendicular of the 12th–fourteenth centuries.

Parish life

The church serves a multicultural and multi-ethnic community in Harrow on the Hill, part of the Harrow Deanery of the Diocese of Westminster. The parish maintains an online prayer community where people can post prayers or pray for the intentions of others.

Visiting

A car park is available at the church for weekend use around Mass times, though spaces are limited. The church is a short walk from Harrow-on-the-Hill Metropolitan Line tube station and bus station. A prayer is displayed at the entrance to the church.
