About Our Lady and St. Chad

Our Lady and St. Chad is a Roman Catholic church in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.

Introduction

Our Lady and Saint Chad in Kirkbymoorside, within the Diocese of Middlesbrough, was designed by London architect Bernard Smith in the Early English style. The church was opened in June 1897 by Mrs Fenwick, one of the principal benefactresses.

History

Before the current church, the community worshipped in a rented joiner's shop in Tinley Garth from 1867 for over thirty years. The foundation stone was laid in October 1896 and can be seen under the statue of Mary. The church has been served from Ampleforth Abbey for over a century.

Architecture and furnishings

The canopy over the altar was designed by a Parish Priest and depicts four angels with a central dove. The ornamental panel behind the altar has three sections originally from Gilling Castle, moved to Tinley Garth Chapel, and finally installed in the newly-built St Chad's Church.

Parish life

The church community actively supports and participates in events and services with Ryedale Christian Council and Churches Together. The Parish Council acts as an advisory body to the Parish Priest. The Parish Council includes the Parish Priest, Treasurer, elected members from both St Chad's and St Mary's, and appointed representatives of the Working Groups. Council meetings are held regularly throughout the year with an Annual Parish Meeting in the Autumn. Churches Together in Kirkbymoorside, with Next Steps and Ryedale Carers, runs a Community Lunch at the Methodist church each Thursday.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Preparation for both children and adults takes place at St Chad's. Confessions are heard by appointment. Couples wishing to marry in the parish should speak to the priest prior to arrangements being made. Funerals at St Chad's or St Mary's are arranged through the funeral director according to the family's requests.
