About Our Lady Immaculate, Westbourne

Our Lady Immaculate, Westbourne is a Roman Catholic church in Westbourne, Dorset. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

Our Lady Immaculate in Westbourne, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, was established as a parish in 1969, having previously been served from Sacred Heart, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth.

History

The building that now houses the church was erected in 1886 by Henry Joy as Assembly Rooms, later called 'Victoria Hall'. In 1889 Rev. George Morris acquired the building for Church of England services and renamed it 'St Nathaniel'. The church became home to the stone and marble font previously from Westbourne Methodist Church. In 1907 a licence was granted and the building was renamed 'Christ Church'. In 1928 local Roman Catholics bought the market and had it converted back into a church, known since as 'The Church of Our Lady Immaculate'.

Architecture and furnishings

The distinctive arched entrance and semi-circular gates were added in 1955, designed by Alan Stewart & Gordon Sutcliffe Architects. In 2018 a new state-of-the-art sound system was installed and the church was re-decorated.

Parish life

The parish is a member of the Bournemouth and Christchurch pastoral area, part of the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth. The parish community processed through the streets of Westbourne with a floral arrangement carrying the image of Our Lady of Fatima. The church is situated in the heart of Westbourne High Street. Visitors are welcomed to visit the church.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish priest talks couples through preparations for marriage. The parish runs groups including First Holy Communion, Mother's Prayers, and Wednesday pre-Mass Rosary.
