About St. Joseph and St. Walburga

St. Joseph and St. Walburga is a Roman Catholic church in Poole, Dorset. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.

Introduction

Saint Joseph and Saint Walburga in Poole, within the Diocese of Plymouth, traces its origins to the original St Joseph's Church, which opened in July 1895 on Bournemouth Road with seating for 150.

History

In 1956, a new parish priest took charge and by 1958 had cleared the parish debt and established a Building Fund. Construction of the new St Joseph's began in August 1960 at an estimated cost of £30,000. The Foundation Stone for the new church was laid on 30 April 1961. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on 20 February 1962. By late 1960 parishioner numbers had grown to over 1,300, making a bigger church necessary.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish encourages parishioners to inform hospital chaplains when going into hospital, providing contact numbers for Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Saint Ann's and Alderney hospitals.
