About Our Lady of Lourdes, Hillside
Our Lady of Lourdes, Hillside is a Roman Catholic church in Southport, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Introduction
Architect LAG Pritchard designed the church, which replaced a temporary church built in 1931.
History
The Weld-Blundell estate donated the land for the present building, and the church opened in 1956. The church continues the pre-war tradition of brick churches on a longitudinal plan with simple basilican form, featuring a tall landmark tower.
Parish life
The parish community comprises three churches: St Joseph's, St Teresa of Avila, and Our Lady of Lourdes. Catholic schools in Birkdale are part of the Archdiocesan family of schools.
Greeters welcome the congregation, give directions, and hand out the newsletter. Flower arrangers provide floral displays each week reflecting the liturgical seasons and are available for funerals, baptisms, and weddings. Readers prepare for celebrations by reading, understanding, and praying on the Word. Eucharistic Ministers assist with Holy Communion at Sunday Masses and visit the housebound at home or in care homes.
