About St Joseph, Birkdale

St Joseph, Birkdale is a Roman Catholic church in Birkdale, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Introduction

The church was built to accommodate the growing population in neighbouring Birkdale.

History

Edward Welby Pugin designed and oversaw the building of the church and a house for the priest on land donated by Thomas Weld Blundell at the corner of York Road and Albert Road, which later became Saxon Road. The parish community comprises three churches. Eucharistic Ministers visit the housebound at home or in care or nursing homes.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a nave with chancel, south aisle and west narthex, in early English style. The exterior features a 6-bay nave with buttresses and one narrow lancet in each bay, a west gable with a lean-to narthex, a large wheel-window, and an elaborate bellcote of two very steeply-pitched stages surmounted by a finial. The chancel has a traceried circular east window, 3 lancets and a chequered frieze. The church is built of red brick in English garden wall bond with blue brick bands, sandstone dressings, and a steeply-pitched slate roof with a west bellcote. The church forms a group with the associated presbytery on the south side.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The flower arrangers provide floral displays each week reflecting the liturgical seasons and are available for funerals, baptisms, and weddings, if requested. The readers prepare for the celebrations by reading the Word, understanding it, and praying on it.
