About Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic church in Plymouth, Devon. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.
Introduction
Father Keily’s death in 1928 was followed by a decision to erect Our Lady of Lourdes in Plymouth as Father Keily’s memorial church. The earliest celebration of Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes fell on 22 May 1932.
History
A collection during 1930 paid most of the land purchase and the construction of Our Lady of Lourdes. The foundation stone of Our Lady of Lourdes was laid by Bishop Barret in 1931. A small stained glass window at Our Lady of Lourdes was designed.
Parish life
The church's choir loft houses a small but powerful pipe organ. Children aged eight or above are invited to join a programme of preparation to receive the Sacrament of Penance and make their First Holy Communion.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Adults seeking Baptism are directed to the RCIA course. The RCIA course usually starts in September each year.
Marriage dates are arranged by calling the office, giving a clear six months' notice. First Holy Communion enquirers must provide a copy of the child's Baptism Certificate.
Visiting
The church provides a ramp for wheelchair users, handrails, an accessible toilet, baby changing facilities, an assistive listening loop system, and a large print newsletter. Indoor and outdoor grottos honouring Our Lady of Lourdes are available for visitors to see. A plaque on the back wall of the porch commemorates Mary Teresa O'Reilly and Mary Josephine O'Reilly, whose generosity paid the church's debt. The annexe and kitchen, built in 1975, can be opened or shut to allow extra seating at Mass or used for social occasions or meetings. Visitors can ask the Welcome Group for help if required.
