About Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic church in Redditch, Worcestershire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Introduction

Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Redditch, within the Archdiocese of Birmingham, was built in 1834 and has undergone various restorations, the most recent being in 2012.

History

The first stone was laid on 11th February 1833 following designs by architect Thomas Rickman, a pioneer of the Gothic Revival. The church was opened with Solemn High Mass on 24th April 1834, celebrated by the first parish priest, Rev. Alexius Pope, O.S.B., in the presence of the Right Rev. Dr. Walsh, the Vicar Apostolic of the Midland District. Downside Abbey provided an uninterrupted succession of priests from 1834 till 1948, then offered the care of Redditch to Belmont Abbey, which provided priests for the next twenty years. The interior underwent a series of alterations in the 1970s and early 1980s culminating in a major re-ordering in 1984. The 2012 refurbishment restored the layout to reflect the architect's original design and returned a number of earlier features. The church was built in 1834 by Thomas Rickman with mid-C20 alterations and additions, in sandstone ashlar partly stuccoed with slate roofs.

Parish life

The Parish Choir sings at Holy Mass on weekends and at other important celebrations throughout the Liturgical Year. The parish runs a Guild of St Stephen altar server society, which enrolls servers after 12 months of service. Polish and Keralan communities are active participants in parish life.
