About Our Lady & Saint George

Our Lady & Saint George is a Roman Catholic church in Penilee, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

The parish of Our Lady and Saint George in Penilee was founded in 1949. Thomas Smith Cordiner designed the new church. The new church was opened on 14 December 1959.

History

By 1954 the parish had about 3,000 parishioners, mostly from Saint Anthony's, Govan and Our Lady and Saint Margaret's, Kinning Park. The foundation stone is built into the arch on the Gospel side of the sanctuary.

Architecture and furnishings

The main church building has suffered from a 'Greenhouse Effect' due to poor sealing of windows and doors. New windows and doors were completed in 2018.

Music and liturgy

A group of musicians and cantors in the parish prepares and leads the congregation in song at worship. Singers and instrumentalists playing organ, guitar, flute, and clarinet serve the parish.

The parish Liturgy Team plans the liturgical life of the parish, principally from the celebration of the sacred Triduum and embracing all seasons of the Church's year. The Liturgy Team includes representatives of the liturgical ministries: Readers, Musicians, Flower Arrangers, Eucharistic Ministers, Passkeepers, Catechists and Children's Liturgy.

Visiting

The Parish Pastoral Council evaluates the pastoral life of the parish annually and plans the pastoral year. The church hall served as a temporary church while the main church was closed for flooring replacement. The church hall was demolished in October 2011 to make way for a new hall for parishioners and the wider community. A clause in the deed of sale banned the sale of alcohol on the whole site, with an exception for existing usage to allow the hall bar to run.
