Our Lady & St. John

Introduction

A church with seating for 200 was built on ground near Blackwood purchased from the Duke of Hamilton, opening on 16 December 1880 when Archbishop Maguire preached.

History

In 1872 the Catholic community of Blackwood, previously served from Strathaven, was attached to the newly erected mission of Larkhall. Before Blackwood became the centre for the district, Mass was said occasionally at Draffan, Lesmahagow and other places. The mission territory comprised the villages of Blackwood, Lesmahagow, Draffan, Stonehouse, Auchenheath, Netherburn and Coalburn.

The stained glass windows at Our Lady & St John's have been in place since the church opened. A wedding was celebrated at Our Lady & Saint John's.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish publishes months minds and anniversaries to be prayed for. The parish asks parishioners to have their dead loved ones prayed for on their anniversary.

Visiting

The parish holds an annual Forty Hours Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The parish stall sells cards, candles, statues, and religious gifts including rosaries, medals, keepsakes, books, and bookmarks. The Parish Hall is available for private functions, community events, regular lets, and fundraising events.
