About Our Lady Star of the Sea
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Roman Catholic church in Brixham, Devon. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.
Introduction
A former crochet lawn in New Road was the ground on which Our Lady Star of the Sea in Brixham was built, under the title Church to Our Lady, Star of the Sea.
Architecture and furnishings
Our Lady Star of the Sea opened in 1967, and consecration followed on 8 March 1972. A house already on the plot was taken into the new designs for Our Lady Star of the Sea as the presbytery. The original home remains on the site of Our Lady Star of the Sea and is worked into the design, while the finished church largely hides it. On the small plot of Our Lady Star of the Sea, ingenuity was needed to satisfy the planners and provide the required church size.
An early plan shows Our Lady Star of the Sea wrapping around the site so as to gain space for growing numbers. The original architects supplied a sketch of the site layout for Our Lady Star of the Sea. A roof car park was chosen for Our Lady Star of the Sea to meet planning requirements, locating the church on the first floor where more space was available. The tower of Our Lady Star of the Sea was meant to contain lifting gear for a lift from the roof car park down to the church on the first floor.
