About Our Lady Star of the Sea

Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Roman Catholic church in Salcombe, Devon. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.

Introduction

The church was built in 1959 on a new site, in a minimal Romanesque style with red brick facings and steel roof coverings.

Architecture and furnishings

The main church is rectangular with an aisleless nave and a narrower eastern projection containing the sanctuary with a sacristy behind. The west front has three bays with a projecting centre, a concrete canopied door with an oculus above, and side bays with round-headed windows. The nave side walls have four bays divided by brick piers with rectangular metal-framed windows. The eastern projection has two bays with a large segment-headed window lighting the sanctuary.

The interior has a carpet-covered floor, plain plastered walls above a bare brick dado, and a canted boarded ceiling. A broad round brick arch opens to the short square-ended sanctuary. The sanctuary has figurative stained glass of the 1980s and the west windows also have stained glass. The plain timber benches and the simple timber altar are probably original.
