About Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Seaforth

Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Seaforth is a Roman Catholic church in Seaforth, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Introduction

Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Seaforth, in the Archdiocese of Liverpool, was built between 1898 and 1901 by Sinnott, Sinnott & Powell. Most parish musicians gather on a Sunday evening for concert and event rehearsals with SEMusic.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is constructed of yellow sandstone ashlar with red sandstone dressings and slate roofs, in the thirteenth-century Gothic style. Its plan includes a tall nave on a north-south axis, a south-east tower, east and west aisles, a baptistery at the south end, a triple transept, and a full-height apsidal north sanctuary. Inside, six-bay arcades of two-centred arches rest on polished granite columns with unusually large naturalistic foliated capitals, beneath a hammerbeam roof. In January 2022, an alternating quiet Mass began to take place on a Saturday evening.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs a programme of preparation and formation for the baptism of children and adults. Children at the parish's primary schools normally prepare for First Holy Communion in Year Three, while those not at Catholic schools prepare in the parish. Adults who are not Catholics and wish to receive Holy Communion follow a formation course called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Parishioners planning a marriage at St Oscar Romero Parish are asked to contact the parish office early in the planning of the wedding. Anointing at home can be arranged by contacting the parish office, and hospital chaplaincy can be reached via the ward nurse.
