St. Edmund of Canterbury, Waterloo

Introduction

Anthony Ellis designed the building at the tail-end of the Gothic Revival. The church retains original features from St Thomas of Canterbury, including the baptismal font and statues of Mary and the Sacred Heart at the west end.

Parish life

A Parish Music Team was formed after a review of music provision across both parishes, with musicians from both churches and open invitations to parishioners. At both church buildings, anyone is welcome to join the choir loft to help make music.

The parish has a programme of preparation and formation for the baptism of children and adults. The parish offers the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for adults who are not Catholics and would like to receive Holy Communion.

Visiting

Visitors can see a copy of Rubens' 'Descent from the Cross' hanging outside the confessional on the west wall. The Canterbury room was refurbished with a new kitchen, office, toilets including a disabled one, and a new confessional. Improved lighting was installed in and around the sanctuary and side chapels, and at the back of the church near the entrance fixed to the canopy of the organ loft. New laminated wood floors were laid in both side chapels and in front of the two shrines.
