About Sacred Heart and Saint Gilbert of Sempringham, Bourne

Sacred Heart and Saint Gilbert of Sempringham, Bourne is a Roman Catholic church in Bourne, Lincolnshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Sacred Heart and Saint Gilbert of Sempringham in Bourne is the first permanent Roman Catholic centre in the town since the Reformation. The church, named after Saint Gilbert of Sempringham, is a modest building and one of the first completed as part of the St Gilbert’s Road development.

History

The temporary church was officially opened in January 1950 as the church of the Sacred Heart. The church had an expected life span of ten years, although it was subsequently used until the present building was completed in the autumn of 1976. The Altar Society, formed in 1949 by the early pioneers of the faith in Bourne, was credited for much of the development. In January 1957, the Catholics of Deeping, Bourne and Corby Glen became a parish that existed until 1984, when the district was re-organised, Corby Glen was transferred to Grantham and a new parish known as Bourne and Deeping was formed.

Architecture and furnishings

The priest for Bourne, the Deepings and Corby Glen explained that it would be a dual purpose church, with the sanctuary able to be closed off and the rest used as a hall. The church, or centre as it was known, can seat 200 worshippers. The church cost £70,000, with more than half raised by the time it opened. The circular shape excited great interest and surprise when the design was announced, and a model was commissioned from Mr Thomas Wilson of Oakham. The church stands immediately next to the bus station built at the same time, and has been mistaken for a cafeteria by visiting bus passengers.

Notable people and events

Miss Margaret Sarll was presented with the Bene Merenti medal in 1974 for her church work spanning forty years. She was a founder member of the Altar Society in 1949, formed to assist local priests in parochial matters and to help raise funds for a permanent building.
