About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in Caterham, Surrey. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Introduction

The church was built in 1881 by E. Ingress-Bell. The church is built of dressed stone with stone quoins and dressings, and has a plain tiled roof with a wood shingled fleche over the crossing carrying a metal weathervane.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a cruciform plan with transepts, an apsidal chancel with chapels, a narthex across the west end, and a vestry addition to the north east. The interior has three bay nave arcades on square stone piers with moulded angles, a south aisle lower than the north, and a wooden ceiling with a wood quadripartite vault over the crossing. The chancel walls contain nineteenth-century wall paintings of angels and foliage patterns. The church has a chancel arch with three orders of jamb shafts and hood moulding.

Music and liturgy

The choir practises usually on a Monday evening in the church. The parish hopes to form a children's choir in the future.

A petition signed by about twenty-five people requested a regular Mass according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The parish has a Parish Council.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs an Alpha Course in Autumn 2026, with a continuation leading to Easter for those wishing to be baptised or received into full communion. The parish requires twelve months' notice for marriage in this diocese. The parish has four registered persons who can register weddings. The parish offers natural family planning support from a young mum who is a doctor.
