About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in London, Greater London. It is part of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family of London.

Introduction

The RC Church of the Sacred Heart was built in 1929, extending back to Medway Street.

History

The freehold for the original Methodist Chapel was bought in 1839, and in 1866 the Chapel was demolished and a larger one built. A new RC Chapel of Ease was established in 1916 on the site of the old Methodist Chapel. The current church was built in 1962 by Harry G Clacy, to replace the Chapel of Ease bombed in 1944. The church was ruined by bomb damage during the Second World War, and works to rebuild it were completed in 1963 by H.G. Glacy. The community celebrates All Saints’ Day on the second Sunday after Pentecost and observes five Saturdays of All Souls throughout the Church Year.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is red brick in a modest Gothic style with a steep tiled roof, set back from the road by a small landscaped enclosure. The front façade features a tall tripartite window with Gothic tracery, above a band of six smaller windows with stone surrounds framing a small statue of Christ. A recent Lottery grant funded a single-storey extension with a grass roof added to the side of the building, to provide teaching facilities. The right-hand stained glass window in the sanctuary displays the coat of arms of the first Exarch for Ukrainians in this country, who as Archbishop of Westminster served in that role.

Music and liturgy

The community administers the Eucharist in the Byzantine rite using leavened bread and a spoon, with communicants standing. Until 1 September 2023, the community used the old Julian calendar, with liturgical dates occurring 13 days after civil dates.
