About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in Wadhurst, East Sussex. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.

Introduction

Bishop Peter Amigo officially opened and blessed the Church of the Sacred Heart in Wadhurst on March 11, 1929.

History

In 1879 a monastery called The Mount was founded just north of Wadhurst Station, where Rosminian priests resided and people attended Sunday Mass in the chapel. When the Rosminian nuns left, it became clear that lay staff would have to take over the running of the school.

Parish life

Sacred Heart marked the Feast of the Assumption with a rosary procession around the garden and the singing of Marian hymns. The parish area covers seven villages: Wadhurst, Mark Cross, Rotherfield, Frant, Ticehurst, Flimwell and Stonegate.

A group of 12 parishioners from Wadhurst, Mayfield and Burwash took part in the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes with over 740 pilgrims. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served after Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart. The parish offers Children's Liturgy of the Word. The parish has prayer groups.

Parishioners are asked to inform the priest when a family member is sick or housebound, so that Holy Communion can be brought to them at home. The graveyard is accessible to pedestrians and wheelchair users via a path beside the Church Annexe and can be visited at any time.
