Saint John the Baptist

Introduction

The construction of a highly visible, solid stone church in Melville Street in late 1832 provided a focus for the religious and social life of Catholics in the town.

History

The mission in Perth was officially opened in 1830. The church was opened towards the end of 1832.

The church was extended in 1855-6, from which period stems the oldest picture of Saint John’s. In 1892-3, a renewed extension of the church resulted from continued growth. The mission officially became a parish in 1946.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is mid pointed Gothic with a 5-bay nave and side porch, rubble-built. In 1856 the building was lengthened by 37 feet and a tall traceried window inserted. In 1892 Andrew Heiton raised the roof over the older portion and completed the apse.

Parish life

Football teams associated with the mission, like Perth Celtic and Erin Rovers, represented Perth’s Catholics in the local league from the 1880s. The parish had a branch of the United Irish League in the 1880s. A library is provided for the use of the congregation in the Young Men’s Hall.

Sacraments and pastoral care

A hospital chaplain is available for emergencies and sick calls. Parishioners can use a form in the church porch to update their records. The parish takes part in the National Conversation, a UK-wide listening exercise. A special collection supports the Sick & Retired Priests Fund.
