About Saint John Vianney

Saint John Vianney is a Roman Catholic church in Alva, Clackmannanshire. It is part of the Diocese of Dunkeld.

Introduction

A substantial contribution went toward the cost of a new church needed in Alva, intended for dedication to Saint John Vianney, the Cure of Ars, one of the saints canonised in that Jubilee year. On Tuesday 8 September 1925, Bishop Toner, Bishop of Dunkeld, blessed the cross at the apex of the facade, and on Sunday 18 April solemnly blessed and opened the new Church of Saint John Vianney.

History

Catholics in the Hillfoots had their needs met by priests from Saint Mungo's Parish, Alloa, from the Restoration of the Scottish Catholic Hierarchy in March 1878. The Alva community's needs were met by priests from Alloa until June 1914.

Architecture and furnishings

A house in East Stirling Street, bought in 1920, had a laundry and pantry behind it refurbished as a single-room chapel for about 50 people. Ground attached to the house allowed a small church, with work beginning after an announcement in the Poor Mission Fund annual report.

Parish life

The church serves Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar, the Hillfoot towns, and the villages of Glenochil, Fishcross, Benview, Coalsnaughton, Devonside and Dollarbeg.
